Gorlaeus Bicycle Storage

A new bicycle storage in the remnants of former Gorlaeus high-rise lab
The sustainable demolition of the Gorlaeus high-rise of the Faculty of Science is now complete. A part of the steel construction will form the basis of a new green bike park.

The lower stories of the old Gorlaeus high-rise were saved from demolition. More information regarding this process can be found on the project page of sustainable demolition of the Gorlaeus tower.

They will be turned into a new, green bicycle storage to accommodate more than 3.000 bikes. The storage will be ready for use with the opening of phase 2A of the Gorlaeus Building. The bike storage will be located on the ground floor. On the first floor, a pleasant, biodiverse rooftop garden will be created. Part of the old steel construction will be turned into a plant-clad pergola. In this green area, people can sit down and relax.

The demolition of the old Gorlaeus high-rise of the Faculty of Science was done in such a pioneering and sustainable manner as to be granted the BREEAM Excellent certificate. CO2 emissions were limited to a minimum, and at least 70% of the raw materials generated were reused. For example, approximately 150 tons of steel is used for the main supporting structure of the new BioPartner5 building.
