Mendelweg Car Park

Naturalis wants to build a parking garage on a plot of land at Mendelweg North on the Leiden Bio Science Park. Besides parking for museum visitors, the car park will also be used by companies and institutions on this part of Leiden Bio Science Park for their employees and visitors. In addition, the car park will serve as a Park & Ride plus facility for visitors to Leiden city centre, for example.

Location

Combining parking needs

Naturalis encourages the use of public transport, and the car park is an example of cleverly combining parking needs. The new car park also enables Naturalis to offer visitors who come by car attractive facilities right next to the museum. The intention is that for the visitor, the Naturalis museum experience will already start when they buy a ticket, make the journey to the museum and also park their vehicle. Once the car park is ready, Naturalis will transform the current car park next to the museum into a public biodiverse museum garden with educational elements.

Park & Ride plus pilot

A further important feature is that the car park will be equipped as a 'Park & Ride plus pilot', a trial as part of the Car-Free Inner City Agenda. Under this pilot scheme, the garage will also be available for visitors to Leiden city centre, for example, who can park their car in the garage and then continue to the centre by another means of transport. Once they have parked their car, they can use a loan bike, for example, or switch to public transport.
